Stem font is a contemporary Sans Serif font family characteristic with its distinctive geometrical shapes. There is a very interesting concept behind its creation as it is designed to be a solution to an old problem – the fact that many sans serifs do not look equally good in the large sizes and in a body text. The Stem designers, having carefully analysed the nature of the problem and the reasons behind its existence, offer us a very bold solution – an optical sized Sans Serif. Their plans include the development of three family branches – Display – for large sizes, Text – for prolonged reading and Caption – for the smaller sizes. In this manner, the users will be provided with the perfect typeface for any purpose.
The first part of the family – Stem Display, is specially designed to work in the largest points sizes. As you can imagine, the legibility is great for use in headlines, titles, posters, advertising, inscriptions, etc. Display comes in 12 weights – Stem Hairline, Stem Thin, Stem Extra Light, Stem Light, Stem, Stem Medium, Stem Bold with the last five having there respective true Italics. Many extras are included like stylistic alternates, superiors and inferiors, true small caps, different kinds of digits as well as extensive language support for Latin based languages. There is also a special feature that deserves a special mention – the very carefully and professionally designed Cyrillic glyphs.
Stem font family is a brainchild of a triumvirate of very talented Russian type designers – Alexandra Korolkova, Maria Selezeneva and Isabella Chaeva and is released by one of the most famous East European type foundries – ParaType. We have already seen the marvelous results of the co-operation between Alexandra and Maria (Journal Sans New font) and we are very pleased that the inclusion of another team member has worked greatly too. We are impatiently waiting for the further development of their joint projects!
