HWT Artz font by the internationally acknowledged graphic designer Erik Spiekermann (and published by Hamilton Wood Type Foundry) is a rounded Sans, a reminiscent of the early 20th century European poster lettering. It has strong visual presence and eye-catching artistic uniqueness, twisted additionally with alternate characters. HWT Artz typeface is designed exclusively for Spiekermann’s print studio (P98a in Berlin) and intended to be cut into large size wood type. The digitized version of the typeface is proposed to the general public with proceeds of sales to benefit the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum.
HWT Artz font is named in accordance with two naming conventions: the Hamilton Museum’s tradition of paying tribute to key figures from its living history (Dave Artz is a Hamilton Manufacturing retiree and master type trimmer), and Spiekermann’s tradition of four letter font names.
Erik Spiekermann is prominent graphic and type designer, typographer and professor at the University of the Arts Bremen, Germany. His long and productive design career is associated with worldwide renowned brands such as Audi, Bosch, VW, German Railways and Heidelberg Printing and many others. Erik Spiekermann’s typefaces FF Meta and ITC Officina have been recognized as modern classics. He is co-founder of the FontShop International type foundry together with Joan Spiekermann and Neville Brody. Check his ITC Officina Serif font.
The Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin is the only museum dedicated to the preservation, study, production and printing of wood type. P22 type foundry and the Hamilton Wood Type and Printing Museum are partners in the noble endeavour (known as HWT – Hamilton Wood Type Foundry) to preserve and present the 19th Century wood type heritage to the contemporary audience using advanced digital typeface technologies.
