Lady Dodo is a modern decorative hand drawn typeface that is the second one designed by the Argentine designer Laura Varsky after the release of her Lady Rene in 2010. Once again she works together with Alejandro Paul which gives her the opportunity to achieve the best results possible. Laura studied graphic design and graduated from the Buenos Aires University. She has been teaching typography in the same university for 10 years specializing in the same time as a designer of books and CD sleeves, as well as an illustrator. Luckily, she discovered and exploited her talent in type design and, as Lady Rene and Lady Dodo fonts show us, she has a great potential to fulfill.
Lady Dodo font itself is another example of how well Laura Varsky copes with the task of creating handwritten fonts. This time, it is like a lesson of how to combine the painstaking calligraphic work of brush drawing letterforms with the great features of the modern OpenType technology. However, such a project needs proper inspiration and Laura found it in the book ‘Life and flowers” of the Noble prize winning Belgian author Maurice Maeterlinck. Renowned for his nature related essays, Maeterlinck shows us that great facts stand behind rather simple events of nature. That is exactly what Lady Dodo font counts on as it demonstrates us how interesting occasional heavier strokes or ink stains could be. As a result this typeface is quite lively and vivid and as friendly as you can imagine. On top of it, Lady Dodo (with more than 900 glyphs) utilizes the formidable options OpenType format offers, providing vast number of alternate characters for upper and lower case as well as for numbers. This, together with the font’s unique appearance, make sure that the projects it will be used in will have strong individual look. However, Lady Dodo font provides one more extra – very interesting module sets that gives the opportunity to create patterns and frames.
