Pinel Pro font
Pinel Pro font is a serif font that draws its inspiration from the work of the famous French typographer Joseph Pinel. He liked to be called “typographical engineer” but was indeed a draftsman at the Linotype works in Altrincham. Having had big experience with working with Linotype machine, Pinel used his knowledge and invented the Dyotype – a rather complicated composing machine. He moved on and established the Pinel Dyotype company in Paris which built the machine with the help of the Jules Derriey – a printing press manufacturer. Along with this works, Pinel supervised the creation of the famous “French face” that was originally released in 1899.
Indeed, it is the Dyotype machine’s major flaw – the lack of sufficient capital – that inspired the Dutch typographer Coen Hofmann to digitalize the font. Having had only damaged and incomplete drawings, he used all his vast experience and imagination to redraw all the characters. The end result though is a quite pleasing roman (including Small Caps) and italic.
As was mentioned, Pinel Pro font’s author – Coen Hofmann is a Dutch type designer. He was born in Amsterdam in 1939. After he had been trained as a typesetter, he decided to study calligraphy. Since then, Hofman has been in the type design profession all his life as typeface designer and painter, having also written several books on calligraphy. Please, take a look at his Seizieme Pro font.
