Quercus Serif font family
Quercus Serif font family is a modern typeface that is a part of the simultaneous release of three font families that also includes its sans-serif version Quercus Sans and Quercus 10 – a serif variant that is intended for use in longer text. The most characteristic aspect of Quercus is that it somewhat stresses on the lighter weights as a response for the growing demand of thinner fonts. Of course the heavy weights suitable for any sizes are also present. Also, there is an interesting inspiration behind the name of this font family. It was named after the oak tree (“quercus” in Latin) as it was felt that this name best describes its qualities – steadiness, durability, functionality and a vast range of possible applications.
Quercus Serif is very distinctive with the thin serifs, vertical shadows and ball terminals. Also the expert way it deals with the spacing, giving enough room for every letter, leaves a very good impression. It makes it a perfect choice for many different kinds of projects like web design, newspapers, magazines, catalogues, dictionaries, programs, brochures, etc. This vast number of options is based on the fact that Quercus Serif is supplied in none less than eight weights – from Hairline to Black with their respective Italics. Lots of OpenType features are provided too – small caps, tabular and proportional lining, superscript and subscript, tabular and proportional oldstyle, cards and genders, swashes, ligatures, fractions, diacritics, arrows, currencies and many more.
Quercus Serif font family is designed by the Czech designer František Štorm and is released by his Storm type foundry. František, who is a graduate from Academy of Applied Arts in Prague, and has a very serious background in the field of the type design including several awards, once again provides a very functional and multi-purpose typeface. You can take a look at his other works here: Metron, Josef Sans, Trivia Humanist.
