Three Dee font by Anna Stoltenberg and Axel Stoltenberg (URW++ type foundry) is unique with its 12,400 overlapping glyphs resembling handwritten lettering with chalk on a blackboard. In fact, the idea of creating Three Dee typeface came to Axel Stoltenberg, long time IKARUS program developer at URW++, after visiting a restaurant where the daily specials were written in a similar manner on the blackboard: every letter is partly covered by the previous one. The realization of this interesting idea and its transformation into a digital format was a real challenge that required a lot of programming and continuous tests until all the “bitten” letters get their proper shape.

The basic Three Dee letterforms were designed by Axel’s daughter Anna Stoltenberg. Their shape is soft and playful, without any sharp corners. The IKARUS generated shadow is added to strengthen the typeface’s 3D effect. Three Dee is a display typeface showing its best at headline sizes.

In order to take advantage of the embedded OpenType features (the automatic access to all the 12,400 character variants) a corresponding layout programme is required (such as InDesign, Quark Xpress, current Open / LibreOffice or MS Word, etc.).
