In 1845 the French writer Prosper Merimee published a novella which, in the years to come, became immortal classic. It was named Carmen and told the tale of a passionate and fiercely independent gypsy woman. It is this woman’s fiery nature that inspired graphic designer Andreu Balius to create a font especially for a new revised edition of the famous book. As it can be expected Carmen font hints at early nineteenth century Spain but at the same time has a very contemporary appearance. The shape of the letters that are elegant and extravagant makes it suitable both for reading text and headlines. Carmen typeface’s Italics add extra dynamics to the text, whereas Carmen Black gives prominence to the details that feature in the Regular and Medium styles, giving them greater depth and strength.
Carmen font proved popular immediately after its release and was used extensively especially in fashion magazines in different countries. Its customized version was used even as a corporate typeface for Victoria’s Secret lingerie. Awards followed soon too, as Carmen typeface was selected as one of Typographica “Favorite Typefaces” of 2008 and “Top Type” of 2009 FontShop.
