Filmotype Wand font
Filmotype Wand font released in 2015 is a digitalized and expanded version of the original that was introduced back in the 1950’s. It was an addition to the long line of slab serif typefaces that were hugely popular due to their extensive use in the Western movies of the period as well as in the fields of the corporate design and packaging. Compared to its ‘relatives’, Filmotype Wand featured considerably higher readability, due to its more round letterforms, but overall followed the fashionable trends of its era characterized mainly by the Wood Type design and bold appearance.
The modern version of Filmotype Wand aims at preserving the original’s feeling and appearance thus reviving the spirit of the 1950’s. However, as a modern font it provides a vast range of choices for its users. Those with access to OpenType compatible software will enjoy a lot of extras like ordinals, stylistic alternates, contextual and case-sensitive forms, ligatures, automatic fractions, superiors and inferiors. But the modern version’s feature that deserves a special mention is the vast language support for more than 90 languages. The font offers specially designed Cyrillic and Greek letters and localized forms for Russian, Serbian, Polish, Romanian, Bulgarian and Turkish.
Filmotype Wand was developed from the original by the famous US designer Charles Gibbons. In fact, to say that Mr. Gibbons’ professional background is impressive would be an understatement. He studied the basics of the type design in his boyhood and later got MFA in graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design. After that, during the 1990’s, he started working in this field first for the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and then as an assistant professor of Graphic Design at the University of Wisconsin. His talent was highly valued and in 2001 he was appointed as the chief designer for the United States Copyright Office. He has designed fonts for Filmotype (Filmotype Western, Filmotype Zeal), Bitstream, Oddsorts, and has a number of very successful bestselling projects for Cultivated Mind in co-operation with Cindy Kinash: Local Market, True North, Ciao Bella.
