Gibbs font is a sturdy and solid contemporary sans serif font inspired by… a ship. Indeed it is inspired by the most luxurious and revolutionary ship of its time. SS United States was built in 1952 and still is the largest ocean liner produced entirely in the US. And it is a true American project – with virtually every state providing some components and materials to build it. In fact the ship was built with the idea to break the trans–Atlantic speed record – something that was achieved as early as at her maiden voyage. In her retirement she still retains the Blue Riband given to the passenger ship which crossed the Atlantic with highest speed.
Named after the ship’s designer – the maritime architect William Francis Gibbs and based on the letterforms seen on various cast aluminum signs found on board, Gibbs font aims at recreating the atmosphere of this amazing human creation. With this font you will feel stylish, solid and comfortable at the same time. And with the large amount of OpenType features included you will be sure that your typing work will be of the highest standards for both text and display sizes.
Gibbs font is created by the American type designer and lettering artist Gregory Shutters – the founder of the New York based Typetanic fonts foundry. The main goal of the foundry is to create fonts based on historic lettering which are adapted to the modern digitalized era. Some of their work includes: Transat font, Transat Text font, Columbia Titling font.
