Torio font by Dino dos Santos and Pedro Leal (DSType foundry) is an elegant cursive script, created as a result of a comprehensive study of the 18th century Spanish calligrapher’s Torio de la Riva book “Arte de Escribir”: one of the most prominent books on calligraphy at that time. Torio de la Riva was a proficient person and exceptionally cultured in many fields of knowledge – mathematics, philosophy as well as history of calligraphy and writing practice.
Torio font is a precised reconstruction of the first ten plates of the “Arte de Escribir” chapter dedicated to the Italian Script, which plates are believed most likely to be written by Torio himself. These engravings are reflecting his specific calligraphy and are also closely associated with the popular at that time style in calligraphy called ‘Spanish Bastarda’. While creating Torio font its designers intention was to stay close to the original with some minor changes in few of the glyphs, mainly in order to make the typeface up-to-date and adequate for more languages.
The Torio font family consists of two fonts: Torio Script and Torio Ornaments. Torio Ornaments contains calligraphic decorative patterns found on the original plates. The Torio Script font power and beauty as a cursive script is in the existence of many alternates per glyph: each letter has at least four variations. Each variation is contextually programmed, depending on the letter that follows, thus preserving the text rhythm and the perfect flow in connecting strokes. These four versions are available for every single letter, both in upper and lowercase. This system of OpenType Contextual Alternates (turned ON by default) is further enriched with more variations reaching up to eight per glyph (some variations for beginning and ending of words, for final letter swashes, etc.) More OpenType features include a special set of Ligatures (ON by default) and Swashes for all ascenders (OFF by default).
The Torio font with its distinctive elegance and flamboyant beauty is perfect for luxury branding, magazines, posters, invitations, and many others.
