Aphrosine typeface is the new and very interesting offer by Paratype. It has somewhat of a dual nature. It is clear that it has its roots in the fine art of calligraphy but at the same time lacks the seriousness and ultimate dedication it requires. On the contrary – it has a perky and playful grit. In fact, to best understand the nature of this font we should mention that it is named after a very odd and eccentric character from the children book “The secret of the ginger cat” by Sergey Task. Aphrosine is a kind hearted witch particularly interested in writing letters. The font is the same – it has mild and joyful appearance mixed with a little strictness. Thus, the typeface is extremely suitable for any projects that require personal approach and will add strong individual taste to any work.
Aphrosine font family consists of three weights – Light, Regular and Bold. Interestingly, their glyphs do not match perfectly each other as different nibs were used for every separate style. Plenty of OpenType features and alternatives are supplied with the idea to make the typeface look like real handwriting. Special attention is to be paid to the beautiful initial and final swashes that will immediately catch your attention.
Aphrosine font family is designed by the Russian designers Alexandra Korolkova and Alexander Lubovenko. It is released by the well established Moscow based ParaType foundry – one of the biggest in Russia. It has a long history, dating back to 1989. All these years the foundry has supplied the public with high quality fonts covering wide range of languages. The ParaType designers are unsurpassed in their work with Cyrillic and particularly when it comes to reviving old Russian specimens. Here you can assess some of their projects: Aelita, Yefimov Serif, Stem, Vaccine Sans, Journal Sans New.
