Berenjena font by the Chilean designer Javier Quintana Godoy, now released by Pampa Type, is yet another example of the way type design flourishes in South America. We have been literally spoilt by the wonderful typefaces that keep on coming from there. Javier – a graduate of the Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana de Santiago de Chile and Universidad Católica de Chile, established himself as a successful type designer with his fonts among the award winners at the prestigious Tipos Latinos Biennial.
It was Javier’s belief that most of the typefaces intended to be used in longer text are not up to the task and make the reading monotonous, that led to the development of Berenjena. The goal was to create such a font that will add style and elegance to this process. To achieve it, he found inspiration in the Neoclassical style of the middle of the 18th century and borrowed some elements from the street signs of Santiago de Chile. The end result is a polite and stylish font family that provides perfect legibility for longer texts, making reading very pleasant and easily flowing.
However, the only ancient things about Berenjena are the inspiration and the vintage appearance. It is quite modern digitalized font that comes in four weights – Blanca, Fina, Gris and Negra, each one with its respective Italics. When speaking of the Italics we should pay special attention to the amazingly beautiful swash capitals they have. As can be expected the font is packed with all kinds of OpenType features like nominators, denominators, all sorts of fractions and figures, greatly looking swashes, ligatures, small caps, etc. The extensive language support for as many as 200 languages, based on the Latin alphabet, deserves a special mention.
