Bunyan Pro font family – a typeface of a great pedigree
Bunyan Pro font family is a modern family with a great pedigree. It is based on Bunyan – the last typeface designed by the famous English sculptor, stonecutter and type designer Eric Gill in the 1930’s and its machine version of the 1950’s – the extremely popular Pilgrim. Bunyan was somewhat of an exception compared to his other fonts. While they were more or less typical of their time with lush and exuberant ornaments, excessive details and high level of eccentricity, Bunyan was much more frugal and heavily focused on functionality. However, the design was successful and was refined by Walter Tracy who also added Italics, thus creating Pilgrim. It was an instant success and was used extensively until the middle 80’s.
Bunyan Pro is the synthesis of those two. We can even say that it is the epitome of both as it utilizes their best features and corrects the mistakes and irregularities. It offers the same clean and neutral look as the original making sure that its grace and elegance is well preserved and conveyed. Of course, during the process of Bunyan Pro’s creation, the designers made sure that all the requirements of the modern media are met. The family offers 6 fonts in 3 weights – Regular, Medium and Bold, with their true Italics. The Regular version is intended for use in smaller sizes from 8 to 14 points, while the other two will account for very effective display application. OpenType features are not forgotten too with small caps, six sets of figures, alternates, ligatures, etc. All this, together with the perfect legibility make Bunyan Pro a perfect text typeface, suitable for entire magazines and books.
