Chercan – a font family for the demanding typographer
Chercan (Chercán) is the latest release of the Chilean type designer Francisco Galvez and is published by PampaType type foundry. It is a result of his close research of classic typeface examples most notably Copperplate Gothic by Frederic Goudy and Antique Olive by Roger Excoffon (1962). Francisco Galvez used many of their greatest features and qualities in order to create a unique font family that will meet any modern requirement and will satisfy even the most demanding users.
In fact, this typeface is designed with the main idea to be as reliable and easily readable as possible. At the same time it avoids the greatest weakness of many similar typefaces that are somehow soulless and dull. On the contrary, this typeface provides very fine balance between refined and elegant look and a versatile and workhorse like nature. All these make Chercan font a perfect choice for longer texts, the reading of which will not cause eye fatigue and will be pleasing enough. Indeed, it will be like an even flow or a bird song – the beautiful song of the little house wren (Troglodytes aedon) or chercan as they call it in Chile.
However, as it often happens with the modern typefaces, this typeface offers much more in terms of possible usage. Francisco Galvez made sure of that by providing 12 fonts in 6 weights – Bianca, Fina, Gris, Morena, Negra and Super Negra, all with their respective Italics. OpenType features include Proportional and Tabular OldStyle and Lining figures, Currency Symbols and more. Chercan follows Amster – another masterful work by Francisco Galvez. We can only impatiently wait for his next project!
