Essay Text font
Essay Text font by Stefan Ellmer (TypeTogether type foundry) is a stylish Serif typeface designed for book publishing. It’s fully equipped with typographic goodies – a slight slant of the roman, the combination of open and closed apertures and the amalgamation of organic strokes and counters with a static, fully straight baseline as well as many stylistic alternates.
Essay Text font features excellent legibility and a natural flow of reading. The typeface comes in two variations: Essay Text Regular and Essay Text Italic. Essay Text Regular looks carries the spirit of the French Renaissance, when the roman typographic letterforms came to full emancipation. Departing from that historical reference, Essay Text becomes a contemporary interpretation of the “archetypes” of that period. Essay Text Italic follows more vaguely that model, resulting in a formalised look with fairly upright and open shapes and little cursiveness. As in the Renaissance, before the mating of roman and italic, Essay Text Italic works as a separate text face and a perfect secondary type.
‘Essay” means ‘attempt’ or ‘trial’. Essay Text font attempts to express a special attitude to reading, a respect to the typographic history without loosing its ability to be original and contemporary, in a skilful balance convention and the designer’s personal idiom.
Ellmer Stefan is Austrian type designer and lecturer, deeply fascinated by the typographic lunacies of the 19th century.
