Sometimes it so happens in life of the creative artists that the inspiration behind some of their best works comes when least expected. Such is the case with Alison Argento’s Saskya font. The idea of it was born during a visit in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts while she was attending an exhibit of etchings of one of the greatest artists of all times – Rembrandt van Rijn. There she came upon one depicting a priest with a lot of text on it. This text and especially the letterforms were so fascinating that she almost immediately decided to create a typeface based on it. To add even more charm to the script, Alison Argento named it Saskya after Rembrandt’s beautiful wife.
Saskya is a very elegant and romantic hand-drawn script that greatly represent the penmanship of the 17th century. It is characteristic with its beautiful letterforms and great legibility for this kind of font. It offers also a lot of glyph variants and ligatures that are available to those with OpenType compatible software. All in all, Saskya could be a great choice for any projects where individual approach is required and especially invitations and greeting cards.
As was noted above, Saskya script is designed by the US designer Alison Argento who is currently based in New Jersey and is published under the label of her Dear Allison type foundry. Originally a travel writer, Alison has a passion for handwritten letters and especially those found in personal correspondence. Her type design efforts are pointed at turning those magic letterforms into contemporary digitalized fonts. Judging by Saskya script, she is quite successful in that!
