Workhorse font is a team project between master sign-painter Greg Reid and Charles Borges de Oliveira (check Fontmatter’s Interview with him). His hot new release is a remarkable example of perfect incorporation between the beauty and originality of hand lettering and… the classic Gothic typefaces. Yes, Gothic – Workhorse is not just an ordinary one with stiff mechanically engineered letterforms where geometry dominates over the design. This one is different – it is related with geometry and simplicity but it is also deeply influenced by the talent of its creators and the beauty of their skilled hands transforming every single detail, even the tiniest one, into piece of art. It is fully OpenType compatible and allows you to customize your text by using a large set of contextual alternates for capitals and lowercase letters. Great to find Real Small Caps in Workhorse. They are not simply resized capitals but exclusively designed new set to match perfectly in size and contrast the existing letters. Charles & Greg did not stop here – following the modern trends and knowing every step from the past they developed an alternative style – the Workhorse Rough. It uses the same geometry of the classic letters but a custom textured has been applied over every glyph making this new font look worn out and eroded by time, winds and rust. Looking very authentic and attractive, the Workhorse Rough is a perfect addition to the original version.
