Blenny font by the US born type designer Spike Spondike (Dalton Maag type foundry) is an amiable friendly typeface with high contrast and very strong visual presence. Its soft curves and overexposed terminals are carrying retro but nevertheless cool spirit, perfect for branding, packaging, headlines, posters, etc. The Blenny font’s curvy and fat letter shapes have several sources of inspiration – the summer South England seaside, a trip to Bangkok, retro types on electronics equipment and gin bottles.
Blenny font contains also Thai script in addition to the Latin script system. The typeface includes a plenty of ligatures in order to provide working tight spacing for every letter combination. Individual glyphs such as the “a” seem to wrap around themselves in a hug, and the “e” looks like smiley, creating something that’s visually very pleasing and unique.
Witnesses claim that Bruno Maag, Chairman of Dalton Maag, fell in love at first sight at Blenny and exclaimed: “I’m considering having a tattoo done with it”. The new font was celebrated by the Dalton Maag studio with the increasingly popular Blenny gin cocktail. Just like the font it’s named after, a Blenny is bold, punchy and has a touch of class:
15ml green chartreuse
1 piece of cucumber
Shake and double strain into a highball with ice. Top with soda. Garnish with a dash of Angostura bitters.
Spike Spondike is type designer from US, living in UK, with interests in music and non-Latin scripts.
