Gira Sans is a font released by Rui Abreu back in 2012. Of course, as is the case with many of his typefaces, this one instantly won an award too – Communication Arts 2013 Typeface Design Winner. Rui Abreu once more did what he does best – to improvise on an old type example. This time his inspiration came from the 19th century and particularly the first sans serifs of the pre– and early Victorian era. Gira Sans with its vintage appearance, greatly influenced by the geometric is a strong reminder of those grotesque typefaces but with modern humanist touch and positive look. The letterforms are quite clean, well balanced with large x-heights and the joins and transitions are typically oblique. Overall, Gira Sans is extremely legible and very pleasing to the eye as well as versatile. All this makes it perfect for numerous applications and vast range of projects. It will suit well as a body text or as a display font and will add individual touch to any editorial design, titles and headlines.
Gira Sans font family comes in seven different weights – Thin, Light, Book, Regular, Medium, Bold and Extra Bold each one with its true Italics. As usual with Rui’s fonts a very rich set of OpenType features is included – small caps for all the weights, non less than eight figure styles, extended ligature support and of course extensive support for languages based on the Latin alphabet. As you can imagine those extras greatly enhance the users’ ability to create and improvise.
As it was mentioned above Gira Sans font family is designed by the Portuguese designer Rui Abreu and is released by his own label. Rui always amazes us with his ability to achieve great results when working with seemingly simple and conventional forms turning them into charming and beautiful fonts. We never stop asking ourselves how he does that. Maybe the answer lies in the fact that Rui is multitalented artist with interests far beyond the mere type design and reach as far as video editing and directing, composing, animation and 3D art and printmaking.
