Scharf is the latest release by The Northern Block type foundry that was much anticipated by those that appreciate their highly professional work. It is a contemporary font family created with the special purpose to be the serif addition, or more precisely said, companion to the previously released Schar typeface. The sans serif was used as a solid base and a template on which masterfully drawn serifs were added in order to enhance the readability even more. When used together both typefaces account for a uniquely large and very rich font system that is characteristic mainly with its dynamic essence. It will be very appropriate for completing complex and elaborate typographic tasks. Yet, if Scharf is to be used separately, the font’s characteristics, its contemporary features and great legibility make it perfect for application in editorial design, magazines, books, headlines, etc.
As usual with The Northern Block releases, Scharf font family is aimed at offering to the users as many choices as possible. Jonathan Hill provide 8 different weights – Thin, Light, Book, Regular, Medium, Bold, Heavy and Black together with their true Italics. There are lots of OpenType features, more than 800 glyphs, small caps with accents, seven variants of numerals, manually edited kerning, ligatures, alternative lowercase letters.
It can easily be said that with Scharf font family The Northern Block type foundry remains true to itself in terms of high professionalism and meeting users’ demands. Here are more examples of their formidable work:
