Xaloc font family is a very modern typeface that is designed to facilitate continuous reading. The typeface is named after one of the most famous Mediterranean winds – Sirocco or Xaloc in Catalan language. We believe that it is not accidental as we see many common things between the nature of that wind and Xaloc typeface. As Sirocco starts gently and then turns into a hurricane so the serifs will provide you with the perfect headline and subhead just to grow into a steady flow of continuous text. As for the appearance – it is based on the Ricardo Santos’ earlier typeface Tramuntana with which it shares many features but has significantly milder look. It’s most distinctive features are the asymmetrical serifs and the geometrically modulated strokes that are very pleasing to the eye. It is important to note that Xaloc is a very versatile serif with its different font versions having different contrasts and x-heights. All in all, the font’s characteristics and appearance make it perfect for use in editorial design, magazines, books, newspapers, posters, etc.
Xaloc font family is designed to provide plenty of choices when it comes to reading. It comes in 4 separate font versions depending on the optical sizes – Caption, Text, Subhead and Display, each of them supplied in 3 different weights – Regular, Bold and Heavy with their true Italics. Also, the typeface is packed with OpenType features that will delight even the most pretentious users. Those include small caps, stylistic alternates, scientific components, titling, old Style, small caps figures, fractions, superior and inferior figures, ligatures, diacritic and linguistic characters.
Xaloc font family is designed by the Portuguese designer Ricardo Santos and is published by Tiponautas type foundry which he runs together with the Spaniard Luis Alonso. Having graduated from the IADE (Instituto de Artes Visuais, Design e Marketing), in Lisbon, and received a Master degree in Advanced Typography at the Escola Eina in Barcelona, Ricardo started designing typefaces in 1997. We can say that in his case this great combination between good education and significant experience works greatly. Follow the links to see more of his work:
